On 10 September 2019, Chris Gayle delivered one of the Caribbean Premier League’s most explosive innings with 116 from 62 balls against St Kitts and Nevis Patriots.

Returning to Warner Park with Jamaica Tallawahs, Gayle struck seven fours and 10 sixes on his way to his highest score in the competition.

The left-hander reached his hundred from 54 deliveries and shared a 162-run second-wicket partnership with Chadwick Walton, who hammered 73 from 36 balls.

Their assault powered the Tallawahs to 241-4, leaving the Patriots with a daunting target of 242. It appeared Gayle had produced a match-winning performance against his former team.

The Patriots had other ideas.

Evin Lewis launched 53 from 18 balls before Devon Thomas struck 71 from 40. Laurie Evans added 41, while Fabian Allen contributed 37 as the hosts maintained the required scoring rate.

St Kitts and Nevis reached 242-6 in 18.5 overs to claim a four-wicket victory with seven balls remaining.

Gayle’s 22nd T20 century was ultimately overshadowed by the result, but the innings remains a reminder of his extraordinary power.

Even at 39, the Universe Boss could still turn a CPL match into his personal six-hitting exhibition.
