The stage is set for a defining electoral showdown at Cricket Kenya, with the April 19 polls widely viewed as a make-or-break moment for the federations future.

The International Cricket Council has threatened to ban Kenya for among others, non-compliance with its membership criteria and persistent governance wrangles.

ICC is categorical that the April 19 polls must proceed.

The Ministry of Sports led by Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya has repeatedly echoed these calls.

With these concerns in focus, the elections are being seen as an opportunity to restore confidence and strengthen governance structures within Kenyan cricket.

Observers say the outcome could play a role in determining the country’s standing in international cricket.

In a letter to the ICC, Cricket Kenya CEO Ronald Bukusi stated that the elections form part of ongoing efforts to align the organisation with required standards.

On April 1, the Cricket Kenya Independent Elections Panel (IEP) released the list of candidates cleared to contest, setting the stage for a competitive race.

For the chairmanship, Bhavesh Gohil will face off with former national team captain and CEO Tom Tikolo.

In the race for Vice Chair, lawyer and former women’s team captain Pearlyne Omamo was declared unopposed.

Omamo, who is the outgoing Director of Women’s Cricket, is expected to play a role in ongoing reforms within the federation.

However, former Cricket Kenya Treasurer Kalpesh Solanki was not cleared to contest for the Vice Chair position.

According to the Independent Elections Panel, Solanki is currently serving a suspension arising from a resolution passed at a Special General Meeting held on May 24, 2025.

The panel stated that this renders him ineligible under Article 10.5(g) of the Cricket Kenya Constitution.

The panel noted that its decision was based on existing records and constitutional provisions.

Elsewhere, the race for Treasurer will see Alfred Njuguna Njoroge compete against Chidambaran Subramanian, while the Director of County Associations seat pits Damian Omonywa against Vidya Chandrasekhar

In the contest for Director of Women’s Cricket, Charity Wambui will face Sarah Kemunto Mayaka.

Sources familiar with the process indicate that candidates are forming alliances ahead of the vote, which could influence the outcome.

In Gohils camp, for instance, are Omamo, Njuguna, Omonywa and Wambui.

The bloc could prove decisive if it holds firm through the vote.

The electoral process is being overseen by a five-member Independent Election Panel led by Aggrey Chabeda.

Chabeda is a seasoned figure in sports governance with extensive experience in electoral management.

Chabeda has served as an electoral official across multiple sports, including rugby, football and cricket.

He has also been an accredited national election observer in all Kenyan general elections since 2007 under the Institute for Education and Democracy.

The panel has released a timetable to guide the process, with key milestones including verification of delegates on April 7 and publication of the final delegates list on April 10. April 2 marked the deadline for submission of delegates nomination forms

With the countdown now firmly underway, attention shifts to whether the elections will deliver the credible leadership needed to steady the ship and convince the ICC that Kenya is ready to turn a new page.
