As the team management awaited the arrival of Jasprit Bumrah and Nitish Reddy ahead of the three-match away series against Afghanistan, which begins on Sunday, a fit-again Washington Sundar worked hard at the Indian team's afternoon net practice on Thursday.

Only ten players were available for training in the intense Delhi heat after Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Ishan Kishan, and Tilak Varma concluded their Duleep Trophy final assignment in Chennai on Thursday. After recovering from his impact injury and completing his return-to-play procedures, Bumrah and Nitish will begin practicing with the team on Friday.

Under the close supervision of head coach Gautam Gambhir and spin-bowling coach Sairaj Bahutule, Washington and Varun Chakravarthy bowled a lot in single-wicket drills on Thursday.

Washington was quite scratchy when facing net bowlers selected from age group and DPL teams, but he bowled well within himself at the center nets (inside main ground). He clearly lacked smoothness, and the timing was off.

Yash Thakur, who took Harshit Rana's place, worked hard to practice spot bowling.

Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma alternated against Axar Patel and Ravi Bishnoi at the Feroz Shah Kotla B nets.

Abhishek appeared more at ease during the 45-minute practice as he attacked Delhi off spinner Hrithik Shokeen as well as the spinners.

Due to a string of injuries over the last six to eight months that have significantly impacted the team's planning, the BCCI is all set to fire senior Team India physio Kamlesh Jain.

"Kamlesh is on notice period. Since this is the Asian Games squad that is playing Afghanistan series, the physio and S&C coaches are the ones who will be travelling to Japan," a BCCI source told PTI.

It is understood that someone from the sports science team had to take the blame since head coach Gautam Gambhir and the national selectors were concerned by the regular breakdown of key players.

Jain, the physiotherapist, has been under constant scrutiny.

Morne Morkel, the pace bowling coach for Team India, was notably absent on Thursday as he had returned home from Sri Lanka.

"Morne's work visa had expired. He had to go back to South Africa for renewal of his work visa. We are expecting his arrival in the next few days," a BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.
