At Lord’s in 1870, Harrow’s Conrad Wallroth had stepped out of the non-striker’s end before Eton captain George Harris (later Lord Harris, the Kent and England captain) had bowled the ball. Harris took off the bails and appealed, and Wallroth was rightly ruled run out. In

Cricket at Harrow, an eye-witness noted that Harris “put himself on to bowl (quite rightly, to my mind), and, pretending to bowl, caught Wallroth tripping, and he paid the penalty”.

We mention the incident here because this eye-witness, Spencer Gore, went on to become the first man to win the Wimbledon. That was in 1877, the same year when the first ever cricket Test match was played.
