Fawley produced a performance to be proud of as they pushed second-placed Hook & Newnham Basics all the way before eventually falling to a 27-run defeat at The Sienna Construction Cricket Ground on Saturday.

The league’s bottom side showed plenty of fight throughout the contest, recovering from difficult moments with both bat and ball to keep their promotion-chasing opponents under pressure.

Having been asked to bat first, Hook suffered an early wobble as Raminder Singh removed two of their top three batsmen without scoring. However, Rupert Armstrong steadied the innings with an outstanding 115 from 129 balls, including 14 fours and a six.

Armstrong was joined by Alex Campbell, who added 54, as the pair rebuilt the innings with a crucial partnership. William Gardner’s unbeaten 33 late on helped Hook reach 273 all out from their 50 overs.

Fawley’s bowlers battled hard, with Singh returning excellent figures of 4-61 and Sufian Munir taking 5-59 in a fine individual display.

In reply, Fawley lost Kieran Earl early but continued to compete, with Brendan Streather (28) and Singh (30) helping rebuild the innings.

Gulfaraz Gulfaraz then produced one of the highlights of the chase, hitting an excellent 50 from just 50 balls, while Callum Earl (25) and Lloyd Coxall (21) kept hopes alive.

Despite wickets falling regularly, Fawley refused to surrender. Sean Williams added late excitement with an unbeaten 32 from just 19 balls, including two sixes, but the target proved just out of reach as Fawley were bowled out for 246 in the final over.

Although the result went against them, Fawley can take plenty of confidence from pushing one of the division’s strongest sides to the limit.

They will look to build on that display on Saturday when they travel to Ripsley Park to face Liphook & Ripsley, with the match starting at 12.30pm.
