Copdock & Old Ipswichian CC have been praised for their ‘outstanding’ organisation of the NV Play NCCA One Day Trophy final.

The comment came from Martin Darlow, who is the chair of the National Counties Cricket Association.

The club hosted the final – the first time it has been staged in Suffolk – at their Old London Road ground just outside Ipswich on Sunday.

Berkshire beat Cheshire by 112 runs to win the competition for the sixth time in the last nine years.

After at one stage being 48-4, Berkshire were bowled out for 210 in 46.4 overs largely thanks to a stand of 104 between Euan Woods, who top-scored with 59, and Ben Salter for the fifth wicket.

Although Cheshire appeared to be favourites, especially after reaching 52-1, the run out of Sam Perry for 23 in the 12th over sparked a collapse and they were dismissed for just 98 in 34.4 overs.

Salter, who returned figures of 6-1-11-4 in addition to scoring 49 runs, was presented with the man-of-the-match award by former Suffolk captain Phil Caley, who is now president of the NCCA.

Darlow, who had a spell as interim chair of the ECB, said afterwards: “Copdock have done an outstanding job of organising the final.

“Martin Taylor and his team have been excellent, including the ladies who prepared all the food, and the club have done everything we could have asked for from them.”

Of the decision to hold the showpiece occasion, which has previously been played at iconic venues Lord’s and Wormsley a combined 31 times out of 42 finals, at Copdock, Darlow commented: “It gets the game out to a wide audience.

“In my view, we have had people come here who would not have previously gone to either Lord’s or Wormsley, so that can only be good. One of my mantras is to get more eyes and ears on the game.”

Of the final itself, Darlow said: “I didn’t think 210 would be enough for Berkshire, but the way the bowled was miserly and they don’t know when they are beaten.”

Copdock head groundsman Martin Taylor said he was ‘tired but proud’ afterwards.

“I think we have done a good job for both the club and flying the flag for Suffolk.

“Both teams have been a pleasure to host and well done to Berkshire on winning the competition,” he said.

Suffolk County Cricket president Tony Warringhton added: “Copdock have done a fantastic job as there is a lot of hard work involved in staging a one-day final.

“All the NCCA officials seem to be very happy with the set up and the way the day went.”
