London [UK], June 4: Lalit Modi, the former chairman of the Indian Premier League (IPL), shared insights about his journey and the support he received from former Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje in an exclusive interview.

Modi expressed that Raje was a strong believer in his vision for a cricket tournament akin to the IPL, noting their long-standing friendship. He reminisced about their connection, stating, “She believed in my vision from the very beginning. We were friends long before she became Chief Minister.”

He emphasized the satisfaction he derives from the IPL, describing it as a product that entertains audiences globally. Modi remarked, “The product I created is gratifying and entertaining for the world.” He also acknowledged the enhanced stature of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) due to the IPL's success.

Reflecting on his passion for cricket, Modi revealed that it transformed into a business venture during his time with ESPN, which later became a personal agenda after he left the network. “Cricket was never my passion until it became a business for me,” he stated.

When asked about any warnings from Raje regarding potential backlash, Modi claimed that he was unaware of any threats until he left India. He stated, “Nobody went after me even after I left India. People appreciate what I created.”

Modi highlighted the generational shift in cricket viewership, noting that younger audiences primarily recognize the IPL rather than traditional formats. “Today’s youth, aged 15 to 18, know little about Test cricket; they only know the IPL,” he added.

On the financial growth of the BCCI, he affirmed that the IPL has significantly increased its revenue share, stating, “When IPL started, it was just 1% of BCCI revenue. Now, it’s 90%, and in three years, it will be 95%.”

Since its inception in 2008, the IPL has revolutionized franchise cricket and emerged as one of the most lucrative sports leagues worldwide.

Despite facing a money laundering investigation by the Enforcement Directorate and a lifetime ban from BCCI in 2013 for alleged misconduct, Modi maintains that he has committed no wrongdoing.

As the founder and first chairman of the IPL, he oversaw the league from 2008 to 2010 and held various significant positions within cricket administration.
