England beat Scotland to get T20 World Cup campaign back on track

Happy Valentine’s Day and welcome to The i Paper‘s sport live blog on what looks set to be a very busy Saturday afternoon.

We will be bringing you updates from the Six Nations, the FA Cup fourth round, the Winter Olympics, cricket’s T20 World Cup and plenty more.

The highlight of the day for those of an egg-chasing persuasion has to be the Calcutta Cup clash between Scotland and England at Murrayfield.

Steve Borthwick’s men have a patchy record in Edinburgh over the past few years but looked imperious against Wales last week and will fancy victory against a Scotland side reeling from defeat in Rome.

In what England’s rugby players will hope is a sign of things to come, their cricketers got the better of the Scots at the T20 World Cup on Saturday morning.

Tom Banton starred with 63 not out from 41 balls as England bounced back from defeat to the West Indies with a five-wicket win.

Over at Milan-Cortina, Team GB breathed a collective sigh of relief on Friday night as Matt Weston claimed their first medal (a gold one at that), with victory in the skeleton. All it took was a taekwondo fighter and £6m.

It’s unlikely the Brits will add to their haul today but Tabby Stoecker and Freya Tarbit have an outside chance in the women’s skeleton.

And we’ll be keeping a close eye on skier Kisty Muir as she competes in the Big Air qualifiers this evening after an agonising fourth place in the slopestyle earlier this week.

Banton stars as England beat Scotland at T20 World Cup

Tom Banton starred as England kickstarted their T20 World Cup campaign with a nervy five-wicket win over Scotland in Kolkata.

Just hours before the two nations contest the Calcutta Cup at Murrayfield, Banton’s 63 not out from 41 balls anchored England’s pursuit of 153 as they bounced back from Wednesday’s loss to the West Indies.

Banton had made three successive single-figure scores and came to the crease with England reeling on 13 for two but, after taking six from his first 10 balls, he showed plenty of composure with Scotland making inroads at the other end.

Stands of 66 with Jacob Bethell and 46 alongside Sam Curran broke the back of the chase as England won with 10 balls to spare to get back on track for a Super Eights place and all-but extinguish Scotland’s hopes of progressing from Group C.

England still need to beat Italy on Monday to all but guarantee they head to the next stage.
