Rohit Sharma’s ODI future has become one of the most debated topics in Indian cricket, with retirement speculation intensifying after his lean run of performances during the England tour.

Reports suggested that the selection committee were considering moving on from the veteran Indian opener ahead of the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup.

The Hitman silenced retirement rumours with a defining knock at Lord’s, yet speculation over his future persists as all eyes turn toward the 50-over spectacle in 2027.

'October 2027 is far away'

Responding to a member of the audience at the Global Fintech Fest, Rohit left the door to his selection in the ODI World Cup wide open with a one-line response, saying October 2027 is still far away.

"October 2027 is far away; we will see about it then," the former Indian captain said.

Notably, Rohit has retired from Tests & T20 international cricket and now represents India in 50-over cricket. The 39-year-old is one of India's biggest hopes in the 2027 ODI World Cup alongside Virat Kohli and is one of the most successful ICC trophy-winning captains, having won two titles -- 2024 T20 World Cup and 2025 Champions Trophy.

BCCI also issued clarification on Rohit's future

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia moved to clarify Rohit Sharma’s future, insisting there is no room for doubt as the veteran opener has been batting impressively. He also pointed out that the Indian opener has struck a hundred in his last ODI outing for India.

"He is playing superbly in all matches. So what more do you want? In the last match (against England), he scored 138 runs, so why is there speculation? I do not want to give some fodder for the speculators," Saikia said to reporters after BCCI's review meeting.

The ICC Cricket World Cup will be co-hosted by South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe in 2027. After finishing as runner-ups in 2023, the Indian cricket team will look to make an extensive push in the upcoming 50-over spectacle.
