Former India batting coach Sanjay Bangar has picked his current World Test XI, and the team selection has already raised a few eyebrows. While several expected names found a place in the lineup, the omission of Yashasvi Jaiswal came as a major surprise, especially considering the left-hander's impressive record in Test cricket over the last few years.

Another talking point from Bangar's selection in the World Test XI was the inclusion of India's newly-appointed Test captain Shubman Gill. The youngster was preferred over several established contenders for the crucial No. 4 position.

Shubman Gill and KL Rahul feature in Sanjay Bangar's World Test XI

While naming his World Test XI during an interaction on ESPNcricinfo, Bangar opted for a combination of experience and attacking intent at the top of the order. He selected Australia's Travis Head and India's KL Rahul as his opening pair before reshuffling the middle order to accommodate some of the biggest names in world cricket.

Bangar also backed Joe Root to move up to No. 3, citing the English batter's vast experience in challenging conditions. Meanwhile, Shubman Gill was picked at No. 4, followed by Steve Smith at No. 5.

"Let me put a current world test level for you. For me, the openers, I want it to be a mix of caution and aggression. So I've selected Travis Head for the kind of performances that we saw in the Ashes along with KL Rahul.

"At three, there were multiple candidates who would go to bat at number four for me, but no number three. So I've decided that I'll ask Joe Root to bat at number three because he's got the great experience of batting in seaming and swinging conditions, so he can take care of the new ball. At four, I would have Shubman Gill. At five, Steve Smith."

Pat Cummins named captain of World Test XI

Bangar continued with a strong lower middle-order and bowling attack, selecting Rishabh Pant as the wicketkeeper-batter and Ben Stokes as the team's all-rounder. He then rounded off the World Test XI with a pace-heavy attack featuring three of the finest fast bowlers in world cricket.

The former India batting coach named Australia's Pat Cummins as the captain of the side while also including Mitchell Starc and Jasprit Bumrah. South Africa's Keshav Maharaj was chosen as the lone specialist spinner in the XI.

"At six, wicketkeeper batter, I'm picking Rishabh Pant. At seven, the all-rounder in Ben Stokes. At eight, Mitchell Starc. Nine, Cummins. 10, Jasprit Bumrah. And my sole spinner for all conditions will be Keshav Maharaj.

"So that, I believe, is a wonderful World XI at test level in terms of current situation who can compete in any conditions. And the captain would be Pat Cummins."

Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ravindra Jadeja shockingly snubbed from World Test XI

While Bangar's World Test XI features several world-class performers, the omission of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ravindra Jadeja has raised a few eyebrows.

Jaiswal has been one of the standout batters in Test cricket since making his debut. In just 28 Tests, the left-handed opener has scored 2,511 runs at an outstanding average of 49.23. He already has seven centuries and 13 fifties to his name, with a highest score of 214*. His consistency at the top of the order and ability to score big runs made him a strong contender for a place in any current World Test XI.

Jadeja's exclusion is equally surprising considering his immense value as an all-rounder. The veteran has scored 4,095 runs in 89 Tests at an average of 38.27, including six centuries and 28 fifties. With the ball, he has picked up 348 wickets at an average of 25.11, including 15 five-wicket hauls and three ten-wicket match hauls.

Jadeja's ability to contribute in all three departments and Jaiswal's remarkable start to his Test career could have easily earned them spots in a World Test XI.

Sanjay Bangar's World Test XI: Travis Head, KL Rahul, Joe Root, Shubman Gill, Steve Smith, Rishabh Pant (wk), Ben Stokes, Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins (captain), Jasprit Bumrah and Keshav Maharaj.
