BCCI to Hold Online Apex Council Meeting: Will T20 Captaincy Be Discussed?

New Delhi, June 3: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to conduct an online meeting of its Apex Council on Thursday. It remains unclear whether the topic of the next T20 captain for the Indian men’s team will be formally discussed.

Sources indicated on Wednesday that while the BCCI will hold the meeting online, there is no confirmation regarding discussions about the next men’s T20 captain.

Since India’s victory in the T20

World Cup under the captaincy of Suryakumar Yadav in March, speculation about the future of the T20 captaincy has intensified. The focus appears to be on planning for the next two years, as India aims to defend its title in the T20 World Cup 2028 and participate in the Los Angeles Olympics.

Some believe that Hardik Pandya and Shreyas Iyer, who currently serves as the vice-captain in ODIs, are in the running to replace Suryakumar. Meanwhile, unexpected contenders for the captaincy role could include Sanju Samson, Tilak Varma, Axar Patel, and Ishan Kishan.

Suryakumar Yadav has been struggling with poor form for an extended period, a situation that the selection committee led by Ajit Agarkar and the team management under Gautam Gambhir can no longer overlook.

The right-handed batsman has scored only 270 runs at an average of 20.76 in 13 matches during IPL 2026. He also faced challenges with the bat during the T20 World Cup campaign. Recently, while playing for ‘Triumph Knights Mumbai Northeast’ in the Mumbai T20 League, he failed to make a significant score.

The Indian team will play its next match in the T20 format during the tour of Ireland in June, with team selection expected to occur in mid-June. Following that, India will engage in a five-match T20 series in England, before heading to Zimbabwe for three matches.
