The Indian Cricket Team will be playing under the leadership of Suryakumar Yadav in the 2026 edition of the ICC T20 World Cup. His first ICC event as captain will be this one. Once the selection meeting on Saturday, 20th of December concludes, the BCCI will officially confirm this update. Following the end of the 2024 T20 World Cup, Surya became the team's new captain. But it's also possible that the mega event of next year will be his final ICC tournament as the captain.

Shubman will take over the leadership duties

After the 2026 T20 World Cup, Suryakumar Yadav can lose his position as the skipper of the Men in Blue in the shortest of the game, according to a news report of PTI. Suryakumar has struggled with poor form and is still present in the team because of his leadership duties. Shubman Gill, the current T20 vice captain, is regarded as a serious candidate to succeed Suryakumar as captain in 2026.

Shubman was named Test captain when Rohit Sharma retired from the longest of the game. Prior to the Australia tour, Shubman was named ODI captain, and he now seems ready to lead India in all three formats.

Many were also taken aback by the choice to name Suryakumar Yadav as the T20 skipper. He was a member of the leadership team while Hardik Pandya was captain. Hardik took over as vice captain after Rohit Sharma returned, and he held the position during the 2024 T20 World Cup. Although many people thought he would be the next T20 captain, the selectors chose Suryakumar Yadav instead of him.

Hardik Pandya was not even appointed vice-captain after this, and he was totally shut out of the leadership group. It's interesting to note that Suryakumar plays in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the Mumbai Indians, who are captained by Hardik. Hardik is still a frequent member of India's white-ball squads, but it seems doubtful that he will return to the leadership group and that he will be appointed vice-captain following the 2026 T20 World Cup.
