Clare Balding's 5 must-watch summer sporting events on TV
The BBC's Summer of Sport is almost here, and there will be no shortage of major events for viewers to follow over the coming months. From world-class tennis and international cricket to elite athletics, the TV schedule is jam-packed with competitions that promise drama, and plenty of history-making moments.
Appearing on The One Show this Monday (1 June) alongside JB Gill and Roman Kemp, sports presenter Clare Balding shared some of the events she's most looking forward to watching this summer.
Whether you're a lifelong sports fan waiting for new thrills or simply enjoy tuning into sporting events for the biggest occasions, these are the tournaments and championships worth keeping an eye on.
HSBC Championships
The grass-court season gets underway with the prestigious HSBC Championships at Queen's Club in West Kensington, London. Traditionally seen as one of the key warm-up events before Wimbledon, the tournament regularly attracts some of the biggest names in world tennis and offers an early indication of who could be in contention for Grand Slam glory.
Coverage is expected across BBC platforms and on the Tennis Channel, with the championships running throughout June (6-21 June). The tournament is often one of the first opportunities for sports fans to see leading stars adapt to grass courts after the clay season - and it will mark Serena Williams' return to tennis after a four-year absence.
Wimbledon
No British sporting summer would be complete without Wimbledon. The world's most famous tennis tournament returns on 29 June, with wall-to-wall coverage once again airing across BBC One, BBC Two, BBC iPlayer and BBC Sport.
The 2026 Wimbledon tournament is set to continue into July, with the men's and women's singles finals among the most-watched sporting events of the year. BBC coverage will include live matches, alongside analysis, highlights and behind-the-scenes moments.
European Athletics Championships
Another highlight of the BBC's Summer of Sport comes in August when the 2026 European Athletics Championships arrive in Birmingham for the very first time. Running from 10 to 16 August at the newly developed Alexander Stadium, the competition marks the first time the championships have ever been staged in the UK.
The week-long event will feature more than 1,600 athletes from over 50 nations competing across 50 events, with Britain expected to field some of its biggest names. Fans can expect everything from sprint finals and relay showdowns to distances races, jumps and throws.
Women’s T20 World Cup Cricket
One of the biggest sporting events of the summer is the ICC Women's T20 World Cup, which begins on 12 June and runs through 5 July across England and Wales. The tournament will feature 12 international teams competing across major venues, like Edgbaston, Old Trafford, The Oval and Headingley.
England will open their campaign against Sri Lanka at Edgbaston on 12 June, while one of the most anticipated fixtures sees India face Pakistan two days later. BBC Sport will provide extensive coverage with live matches and analysis.
The Hundred
One of the most accessible events on the summer sporting calendar returns from 21 July to 16 August. The Hundred sees eight men's and women's teams competing side-by-side in a 100-ball format, while featuring a mix of leading England players.
Matches take place at major venues across England and Wales, from the Kia Oval in London to Wales' Sophia Gardens and Southampton's Utilita Bowl. Since launching in 2021, The Hundred has become one of the biggest events of the sporting summer, combining elite competition with a lively atmosphere and family-friendly appeal.
