Abhishek Sharma is a slogger, says Pakistan ex-fast bowler Amir as Suryakumar Yadav confirms Sharma will be in India's playing XI
What's Included
India captain Suryakumar Yadav has hinted that opener Abhishek Sharma will return to the playing XI for the high-voltage T20 World Cup 2026 clash against Pakistan in Colombo on February 15, brushing aside injury concerns ahead of the crucial match. Suryakumar Yadav made this announcement in the pre-match press conference, even as former Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir triggered a debate by calling Abhishek just a slogger who doesn't have batting skills other than slogging.
Pakistan former fast bowler Amir’s remarks add spice before big clash
The India vs Pakistan clash has gained extra heat after Amir’s sharp comments about Abhishek’s technique and approach.
“By whatever little I have seen, if you ask me honestly, I feel he is just a slogger… I don’t think he is technically sound," Amir was quoted as saying in a Pakistani show.
"He just stands there and wants all balls to be bowled in a particular area. I will consider him a proper batter only when I see that the ball is swinging even slightly and he tackles it well.”
Amir also advised Pakistani bowlers to use bodyline tactics and slower deliveries against the Indian opener.
Abhishek Sharma's Injury
Abhishek was out of the game against Namibia after a serious stomach infection that caused weight loss and hospitalisation.
Before Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav's confirmations, teammate Varun Chakravarthy also gave a positive update on his recovery.
“As far as I have spoken to him he looks good, he did some practice today also. He told me he is on the way.”
The opener has resumed practice sessions and will face a final fitness assessment before the match.
India eye Super 8 qualification
India have started their campaign strongly, registering wins over USA and Namibia.
A win against Pakistan on Sunday will seal their place in the Super 8 stage, making the contest even more significant for both teams.
With team confidence high, a young opener under scrutiny, and cross-border mind games already underway, the India-Pakistan encounter promises drama on and off the field.
All eyes will now be on whether Abhishek Sharma can answer his critics with the bat on cricket’s biggest stage.
