Arshad’s a six hit as Townville defeat leaders to go level at top
Townville are one of four clubs on level points at the top of the Bradford Cricket League’s Premier Division following a dramatic day.
Four teams are level on 119 points with Pudsey St Lawrence still leading the way, but only on most wins after losing to second-placed Townville, whose superior net run rate has them ahead of New Farnley and Woodlands.
St Lawrence started the day 17 points ahead, but were brushed aside as they were bowled out for only 113 when their batting was ripped apart by Usman Arshad’s superb spell of 6-24.
Tom Chippendale chipped in with two wickets before Townville were guided to victory in their reply by an unbroken third-wicket partnership of 60 between Jack Hughes (32no) and Sanoj Darshika (29no).
Skipper Jonny Booth also hit 20 as the Castleford-based team raced to their target with 27 overs and eight wickets to spare.
The Premier Division’s closest finish saw Pudsey Congs edge out Methley by 10 runs.
Congs’ match winner was young Pakistani fast bowler Mohammed Zeeshan who produced a devastating spell of 6-59.
Replying to a Congs total of 200-5 which featured a patient 85 from opener Nick Lindley and an unbeaten 64 from Tom Marshall, Methley saw their top order blown away by Zeeshan as they plunged to 83-6.
But Jake Smart (57) and James Wainman (45) looked to have turned the game round with a seventh wicket stand of 99 that took the side to 182-7 in the 44th over and within 19 of victory.
There was another twist, however, as Wainman’s fall when trapped lbw, triggered a batting collapse and the last four wickets went down for eight runs with Methley all out for 190.
Division Two leaders Great Preston are 13 points clear after an 81-run win over fellow promotion hopefuls Keighley.
They recovered from early struggles against Jack Rogers (4-54) to make 226 through the efforts of Alfie McMillan (59 from 52 balls), Oli Baron (56), Moosa Azad (36) and Jack McGahan (30).
Keighley were all out for 145 in reply as Imran Patel (4-26), Chris Aplin (3-59) and McMillan (3-40) took the wickets.
Northowram Fields are third after racing to an eight-wicket win at Streethouse.
After a towering batting performance the previous week there were no repeat heroics as the home side were shot out for 84.
Ben Brown and Dishane Rodrigo both hit 22, but the innings never really got going and Northowram had no alarms completing victory.
• Townville could not repeat their league success as a bye off the final ball of the game saw them go down to a one-wicket defeat in a tense battle with Honley in the first round of the Heavy Woollen Cup.
Timmy Taylor (122) and Lewis Kenworthy (74no) were the two batsmen who made the decisive contributions as Honley overhauled a challenging Townville total of 286-9, despite the determined efforts of Matthew Lumb (4-56).
Jack Hughes led the way in the Townville innings with a fine knock of 92 that included 11 fours and a six while Mattie Race hit 59 from 57 balls and overseas player Sanoj Darshika contributed 41.
