Report by head coach Mr Darren Holcomb:
St Charles College secured a hard-fought six-point victory over Westville at home on Saturday, producing a strong finish to withstand a determined second-half comeback

Westville arrived full of confidence following their victory over Maritzburg College the previous weekend, while Saints were eager to return to winning ways after a narrow defeat to Northwood.

The home side made an impressive start, with Khwezi Simelane proving a formidable presence against Westville’s man-to-man defence. His strong work in the post and consistent scoring helped Saints establish a 10-point lead by the end of the opening quarter.

Simelane continued to trouble the visitors in the second quarter, ably supported by co-captain Kyle Carmichael. As Westville committed an extra defender to containing Simelane, Carmichael capitalised on the space created, knocking down open shots to help stretch the Saints’ advantage to 15 points at half time.

Westville responded with an effective tactical adjustment after the interval, switching to a zone defence that restricted Saints’ inside scoring and changed the momentum of the contest. The visitors steadily reduced the deficit, drawing to within three points and setting up a tense finish.

Saints, however, showed composure when it mattered most. With the game finely balanced, the home side made several crucial shots down the stretch to rebuild their advantage and secure a six-point win.

Westville’s tactical response and spirited comeback tested Saints thoroughly, but the hosts’ strong opening, home-court advantage and execution in the closing stages ultimately proved decisive.

Following the half-term break, St Charles College will make the short trip to neighbours Maritzburg College for a much-anticipated local derby.

It was great to host Westville in AquaPark for the first time. Right from the first quarter, the visitors showcased superior speed and ball movement, quickly establishing a comfortable lead.

While the hosts fought hard and executed a few strong defensive stops, they struggled to breach the visitors’ formidable defence and clinical counter-attacks. As the match progressed, the visitors’ depth and physical stamina wore down the home side, sealing a decisive and well-earned victory on the road.

1st XI Cricket
Report by head coach Mr Divan van Wyk:
St Charles College First XI hosted Westville Boys’ High on Saturday.

Winning the toss, St Charles College elected to bat first, a decision that proved to be the right one. After finding themselves at 42 for three, following the loss of both openers and captain, the innings needed a partnership to rebuild the momentum.

Ryan Clarke and Caleb Sharp answered the call in outstanding fashion, combining for a magnificent unbeaten 178-run partnership. Clarke led the way with a superb 111 not out, while Sharp complemented him brilliantly with an accomplished 81 not out.

Their partnership transformed the innings and provided St Charles College with a strong platform to put the pressure back on the visitors.

With a competitive total on the board, St Charles College turned their attention to the ball. Westville Boys’ High began their chase positively and looked to build a strong response. However, as the innings progressed towards the 25th over, St Charles began to tighten their grip on the contest, applying pressure and taking crucial wickets.

At 129 for six, the momentum had swung firmly in favour of the home side, and St Charles College took control of the match to complete a convincing victory.

It was an impressive team performance, highlighted by the resilience and composure of Clarke and Sharp with the bat, followed by a disciplined bowling effort that ensured the team capitalised on their strong position.
