Arshad Shaikh's Recovery Journey

New Delhi, October 27: Indian para-cyclist Arshad Shaikh is making a positive recovery following surgery for a displaced fracture in his left femur. This injury occurred during the men's time trial at the Asian Para Games held in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.

Currently, Arshad is recuperating at the Chutoen General Medical Centre located in Shizuoka Prefecture. On Monday, he received a visit from Nagma Mohammed Mallick, the Indian Ambassador to Japan, who extended her best wishes for his swift recovery and return to competitive cycling.

The Ambassador reassured Arshad and his support team that the Indian Embassy would offer ongoing assistance until he is fit to travel back to India.

The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS) along with the Sports Authority of India (SAI) are actively coordinating with both the athlete and the Indian Embassy in Japan to ensure he receives the necessary support during his recovery.

In a post on X, the Embassy of India in Japan shared details of the visit, stating, “Ambassador Mallick visited Chutoen General Medical Centre in Shizuoka to meet Indian para-cyclist Arshad Shaikh, who sustained an injury while competing in the cycling event during the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Para Games 2026. Ambassador wished him a speedy recovery and assured his team of the Embassy’s continued support until he is medically fit to travel back to India.”

Arshad, who represented India at the upcoming 2024 Paris Paralympics, was the sole para-cyclist from India at the Games in Japan. He sustained his injury after a fall during the men’s time trial at the Izu Velodrome in Shizuoka, which is over 250 km from Nagoya, landing on his previously operated left residual limb.

The injury affected the upper part of his femur near the hip. Arshad has an above-knee amputation on his left leg and uses a prosthetic limb.

Prior to the surgery, Dr. Ameya Kagali, the chief physician for Team India, reported that Arshad was stable, with normal vital signs and in good spirits. The Indian medical team had also collaborated with Japanese surgeons to discuss the treatment plan and clarify the nature of the injury and recovery process to him.

His medical team will evaluate Arshad's readiness to travel back to India.
