Katie Taylor stunned some local children by sending them a special message after her heroics at Croke Park last weekend.

The Bray woman hung up her gloves as the undisputed champion of the world with a historic win over French woman Flora Pili at the home of the GAA.

Taylor has become the face of women's professional boxing and has inarguably become one of Ireland's greatest ever sports stars.

But the 40-year-old never forgets her roots and sent a special message to St. Patrick's National School, Curtlestown, Wicklow, after 83,000 people went to Croke Park for her swansong.

In the message, she said: "Hi everyone, it's Katie Taylor here.

"Thank you so much for all your support. I'm so grateful. I hope you all watched the fight on Saturday evening.

"I tried my best, I did my thing and I finished my career as a world champion.

"Nothing is impossible, so go chase after your dreams, word hard and listen to your teacher, Miss Kavanagh.

"God bless and see you all soon."

Fans on social media have been quick to praise Taylor for posting the message to the young schoolchildren.

One person said: "Your fighting is amazing, but you as a human being are magnificent."

Another wrote: "Congratulations Katie, you are an inspiration to all women."

After a long and illustrious career, Taylor has said that she is looking forward to her new sense of freedom.

“My whole life has been one big training camp. I do training camp after training camp after training camp. I'm looking forward to just putting my feet up and relaxing for a while.”

Taylor admitted she can’t see herself not involved in boxing, and didn’t rule out coaching within Irish boxing in the future.

“I'd love to stay involved in boxing in some way. I am living in Connecticut at the moment as well, so I don't know how that would work with Irish boxing.

“But I'm trying to convince my husband to move back home to Ireland with me… I'm not sure that's going down very well.

“But yeah, we'll see what happens. I would love to stay involved in the sport. I think it'd be very strange not being involved since this has been my whole life for the last 30 years.”
