Nantwich Cricket Club’s first team are one win away from a seventh Cheshire County Cricket League title after a dramatic victory in their last home game of the season.

Luke Robinson’s side now go to Cheadle tomorrow (September 12th), knowing that another victory will see them lift the Premier Division trophy.

But it took heroics from their late-order batsmen to secure the win that kept them on top of the table going into the season’s final day.

Brooklands CC arrived at Whitehouse Lane already relegated, but they put up a spirited performance with the bat after winning the toss.

Scott Wardley was the pick of the bowlers, taking 4-32 as the visitors were bowled out for 230.

And although Ben Wright was out to the first ball of the Nantwich reply, the Brooklands total looked easily within reach when Ali Chughtai (44) and Rob Jones (57) put on 96 for the second wicket.

But a middle order collapse saw the Dabbers slump to 155-7 and look in serious trouble.

Phil Stockton, though, dug in and shared a 46-run stand with Spencer Byatt (21) before a 30-run stand with Wardley saw Nantwich home in dramatic fashion.

Stockton finished on 27 not out and Wardley hit the winning boundary to finish on 17 not out.

The destiny of the title will now be decided at Cheadle this weekend.

Nantwich 2nds will finish their campaign with a home fixture against Oxton – 11.30am start – having suffered a heavy defeat at Cheadle.

Only Nick Bentley (24) and Phil Marsh (19) got into double figures as Nantwich were bowled out for 74 after being put into bat by the hosts, who reached their target with six wickets and 29 overs to spare.

The individual performance of the weekend came from Grace Michell, who retired not out after reaching 150 against Didsbury CC on Sunday.

That fantastic knock helped Nantwich women’s first team to 305-4, setting up a 209-run victory as Didsbury were bowled out for 96, Bethan Hughes taking 5-11.
