Hamlin hammers Boyne Hill to secure Falkland a thrilling one-wicket victory
Falkland 1st XI clinched a thrilling one-wicket victory over Boyne Hill, anchoring a massive weekend of action across the club's senior sides.
Choosing to bat first at the Enborne Lodge Ground, Boyne Hill set a formidable target of 280 all out in 42.5 overs in this Thames Valley Cricket League Division One clash.
The visitors’ innings was anchored by a spectacular century from Roscoe Thatill, who smashed 14 boundaries and three sixes in a blistering 108.
Despite Thatill’s dominance, Falkland’s bowling attack kept chipping away.
Captain James Bird led by example, turning the tide with an excellent spell of 4-49, while Zach Pool picked up 2-39 to clean up and halt the visitors' late charge.
Falkland’s response began precariously, slipping to 24-3 as Thatill proved equally dangerous with the ball, tearing through the top order to finish with phenomenal figures of 5-30.
However, skipper Bird steadied the ship, striking a composed 60 before building a vital 115-run partnership with Anthony Hennis, who contributed a classy 67.
The real fireworks came from Oliver Hamlin, whose unbeaten, counter-attacking 80 off just 74 balls turned the game back in Falkland's favour.
Supported by a 24 from Ben Armstrong, Hamlin held his nerve, guiding the hosts to 281-9 with just two balls to spare to secure a maximum 22-point haul.
The following day, Falkland Women’s 1st XI faced an equally tense finish but found themselves on the wrong side of a narrow margin, falling by three wickets to Charlbury in the Home Counties Women’s League Premier Division.
Choosing to bat, Falkland posted a competitive 151-8 from their 40 overs, powered by a superb 46 from wicketkeeper Poppy Camplin and an unbeaten 30 from Chloe Quaintance-Blackford.
Charlbury's Xanthe Bolam and Katie Waugh took three wickets each to restrict the visitors.
Immi Storrar (2-26) and Quaintance-Blackford (2-28) put Charlbury under severe pressure, but a resilient sixth-wicket stand of 50 runs between Waugh and Rebecca Woodnorth ultimately guided Charlbury home to 152-7 in the 31st over.
Across the rest of the club, it proved to be a highly successful weekend of competitive action.
The Men’s 2nd XI replicated the first team's success against Boyne Hill 2nd XI with an excellent 31-run victory in Division 3A.
Solid half-centuries from James Bloodworth (55) and Jack Rider (47), alongside a quick 39 from George Hawkins, carried Falkland to 280 all out.
Despite an unbeaten century from Boyne Hill’s Zain Azad Chaudhary, Ollie Smith’s 3-48 helped restrict the hosts to 249-8.
The 3rd XI suffered an agonising eight-run defeat against Sulhamstead and Ufton 2nd XI in a high-scoring Division 5A clash.
Chasing a steep 350-7 - despite two wickets each from Jaipaul Powell, Nigel Trumper, and William Bedford - Falkland fell just short at 342-9.
Powell played a sensational innings of 110 off 59 balls, featuring eight sixes, while Leo Clark (74) and Aaron Graham (58) provided strong support.
There was excellent news for the remaining senior sides, as the 4th XI secured a fine five-wicket win over Calcot 2nd XI, successfully chasing down 254 by reaching 256-5.
The 5th XI rounded off the weekend’s triumphs with a dominant four-wicket victory against Reading 4th XI, bowling their opponents out for just 75 before comfortably reaching their target.
