Haywards Heath lifted with stunning win over leaders
Haywards Heath are celebrating a fine win over Sussex Premier League leaders Roffey – in which they bowled out the high flyers for just 80.
Heath returned home to face the leaders on the back of some positive results. Sam Henderson won the toss for Roffey and elected to bowl first.
This decision was backed when Freddie Price removed Heath opener Hamdullah Saraj first ball. This became 19-2 when the other opener Freddie Wallis chased a wide delivery and was caught behind of the bowling of Toby Munt.
Heath started to rebuild the innings with Umar Amin and Baalaaj Khan before Khan was removed trying to push the scoring along for 23 off the bowling of Harnoop Kalsi.
Skipper Jonny Phelps joined Amin but their partnership ended in the same fashion with Amin caught behind for 38, the score 91-4.
Phelps was removed for 45 off the bowling of Rambaran at 131-5 and Guy Moore falling for 18 with the score at 191-6. The tail did not wag as Heath then fell to 214 all out with Jethro Menzies finishing with 56.
Haywards Heath felt they had left a few runs out there and knew they needed early breakthroughs. This was exactly what happened with Ollie Moore removing Fin Roberts, caught at first slip smartly by Phelps.
Then came the prize wicket of Matt Davies, who scored a chanceless 100 in the previous fixture – he was adjudged lbw off Menzies for 0.
With the Score at 6-2, Price and Rambaran attempted to be positive to boost Roffey until they both fell cheaply, along with Cripps leaving Roffey 35-5 with Menzies taking three wickets and Moore two.
Heath continued to push but saw a partnership build between Toby Munt and Ben Remfy. After a 30-run partnership, Munt was removed by Amin for 19 after inside edging on the stumps, then Remfy fell shortly after for 14 having been caught behind off Amin again leaving Roffey 72-7.
Wallis brought the innings to a close quickly, with the removal of Ward to a one-handed slip catch from Phelps, Henderson top edging a pull shot for nought then Kalsi being removed, with Roffey being bowled out for just 80 inside 30 overs.
Heath showed discipline with the ball and character to hand Roffey their first league defeat of the season. Being unbeaten in their last four, Heath travel to Hastings next for a crucial game full of confidence.
