The left-hander's blistering knock came to an abrupt end when he was adjudged caught at deep square leg off Blessing Muzarabani, just two runs short of a half-century. Attempting to take on a short delivery, Abhishek pulled hard towards the leg side, where Varun Chakaravarthy sprinted to his right and completed a low catch inches above the turf. While KKR players celebrated immediately, Abhishek stood his ground, unconvinced about the cleanliness of the take, prompting the on-field umpires to go upstairs.
The decision sparked animated reactions, with SRH head coach Daniel Vettori seen in discussion with match officials, clearly unhappy with how the call unfolded. Multiple replays were examined by third umpire Nitin Menon, including zoomer footage that offered differing perspectives.
Some angles indicated that Chakaravarthy had his fingers underneath the ball, while others raised the possibility of the ball brushing the ground. One replay, in particular, appeared to show slight upward movement consistent with contact with the turf, although such motion can also result from the fielder's hand lifting after a clean take. With no conclusive evidence to overturn the on-field decision, the benefit of the doubt stayed with the fielder.
Chakaravarthy's effort, notable given he is not known for his fielding, proved decisive in shifting momentum. Abhishek, who struck four fours and four sixes in a 21-ball 48, walked off visibly unhappy, gesturing as he crossed the boundary rope after a knock that had put SRH firmly on top.
Earlier, Kolkata Knight Riders had opted to bowl after winning the toss, but Sunrisers Hyderabad made a strong start through Abhishek and Travis Head (46). The innings, however, lost momentum quickly as Kartik Tyagi removed Head, before Muzarabani turned the game with a double strike in the same over. Ishan Kishan (14) fell to a well-judged catch by Rinku Singh at sweeper cover, followed by Abhishek's contentious dismissal, sparking loud celebrations as KKR clawed their way back into the contest.
