Malta Seniors Cricket Festival – Sussex shine but Canada take trophy
The 2026 Malta Seniors Cricket Festival came to a damp end as heavy rain scuppered any chance for the final game – but Sussex’s over-60s team can reflect on an enjoyable trip and a decent showing.
Owing to a better run rate from previous results Canada were crowned 2026 champions as the final versus the Aussies was washed out. From start to finish the team showed skill, resilience and the true spirit of cricket.
The ever growing and popular festival on Malta is the brainchild of Cricket Director Frankie Spiteri who is looking to thrust his home firmly on to the cricketing calendar.
Since its birth in 2018 the competition has gone from strength to strength with a YouTube stream showing every ball live with a series of well-known commentators.
Rico Phull has been on mic every day but was joined by Henry Blofeld, Vinny Sandhu, Maria Coppla and Chris Nash. All matches are played at the Marsa Sports Club just a short ride from the capital city Valetta.
While not on duty the players have a great opportunity to explore everything Malta has to offer. Valletta presents the best view on the island across the Grand Harbour while Mosta Rotunda, Rabat Medina and Gozo make excellent day trips. Mix all that with excellent restaurants, bars and a few Cisk lagers, travellers are bound to have a great time.
Under the management of their Tour Director Chris Aeschlimann, Sussex sent a 14-man squad hoping to repeat the success of 2025 when they won the title.
Signs were good in the group as an emphatic win against Essex saw them into the later stages after a slow start versus Kent.
Unfortunately, both Canada and Australia pulled out their best performances to see off the Sussex challenge.
First, Martin Sims continued his fine form with a top score of 34 as Sussex posted 130 all out v Canada. Tour debutant Colin Mansfield scored a neat and tidy 21 off 35 balls.
In reply a stunning run-out by Ian Rippengal gave Sussex hope. However, Rohan Jayasekera calmly saw Canada to a seven-wicket victory with a well-crafted half century.
Two days later against Australia, Sussex’s player of the festival Rippengal anchored the innings with an unbeaten half century. He was assisted by Terry Beeks, who scored a bright and breezy 25. Alan Wyatt smashed a six down the order on route to 41, Sussex resting on a commendable 187 off the allotted 30 overs.
Bryan Cox opened with pace and guile taking one for 22 off four. However, MoM Peter Verechia and John Murphy both hit 31 not out to see victory by seven wickets.
The Sussex team thoroughly enjoyed their Malta experience, with strong team spirt very much in evidence. On the field they will know they have given their all but in truth couldn’t quite get themselves into a winning position when push came to shove. They will regroup and come back stronger in 2027.
