Kuldeep Yadav will play his last game of the season for Yorkshire against Somerset next week, but there is every chance the county have not seen the last of the irrepressible Indian overseas wrist spinner.

Yesterday, Kuldeep completed superb career best first-class match figures of 10-120 as the White Rose completed a resounding three-day, innings victory over Essex at Headingley. 

He claimed four wickets in the first innings and six in the second as, replying to Yorkshire’s 390 all out, Essex subsided to 171 all out and again to 113 all out. 

Kuldeep made the absolute most of a spin-friendly pitch in his second of three red-ball appearances.

Over the last couple of days, Kuldeep, head coach Anthony McGrath and Dom Bess have all spoken to the media, and they were all on the same page.

“I would love to play in the Championship (going forwards), and I don’t want to change the team,” said Kuldeep. “This is a lovely team, lovely lads, and they’re very kind.

“Hopefully I’ll get back next year as well. Whenever I get time, I’ll come and play.”

Those comments were put to McGrath, and he said: “We’d bite his hand off, wouldn’t we?

“We’ve been fortunate for the last year-and-a-bit, the overseas we’ve had have all enjoyed it, and they’ve all said when they can that they’d like to come back.

“Someone of Kuldeep’s mentality and skill, if he can come back at some point of course we’d make that work.”

Off-spinning all-rounder Bess, who fed off Kuldeep to strike five times himself against Essex, was in full agreement.

“Kuldeep has played in everything you could think of and want to,” he said. “The thing I love about KD is the love off craft.

“He comes here to play and absolutely loves it. We talk a lot of spin, and we have a great relationship. We’ve spent a lot of time batting together and bowling together, and off the pitch we’ve spent a bit of time trying to learn from him. 

“I couldn’t speak higher enough about him. He’s such a good fella. 

“I hope he comes back, and I’ll certainly be up in Gavin Hamilton’s office, having a chat and making sure because it also means we play on some spinners!”

Bess also revealed that Kuldeep, a huge football fan and a massive Liverpool supporter, is top of the Yorkshire squad’s fantasy football league.

“He loves his craft, but there’s so much more to Kuldeep than just the cricketer, which everyone associates him with because he’s an Indian superstar,” added Bess. 

Kuldeep was asked whether he has enjoyed his time with the county more than he thought he would when he came in towards the end of July.

“I only knew Jonny Bairstow and Dom Bess because we’ve played against each other,” he said. “But coming here, they were so welcoming.

“Next year, I’ll have to look at the slots. This year I was available for three Championship games, but I think I will play more than that.

“Next year, I might come for six or seven games because we’ll have enough time.

“These guys are very good, beautiful people. It’s lovely to be here.”

On top of that, Kuldeep thinks there’s some darn good cricketers in the Yorkshire squad.

He added: “If you look at our squad, a lot of young guys have a great future for England. Players like Will Luxton, James Wharton, George Hill and Matty Revis. He’s such a good player. They are definitely learning a lot from each and every game, and they have a great future.”
