From title-winning captains to franchise icons, these 10 players shaped the IPL through leadership, longevity, big-match impact and identity.

Influence in the IPL is not just runs or wickets. It is about shaping a franchise, defining eras and driving success.

1. MS Dhoni

Dhoni remains the league’s clearest franchise symbol. He led the Chennai Super Kings to five titles, scored close to 5,500 runs and is the only wicketkeeper with more than 200 IPL dismissals.

2. Rohit Sharma

Rohit turned the Mumbai Indians into the competition’s benchmark team, captaining them to five titles. He has also scored more than 7,000 IPL runs and holds the record for the most sixes by an Indian in the league.

3. Virat Kohli

Kohli is the face of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru. He has played only for RCB, is the IPL’s all-time leading run-scorer with 8,661, owns the records for most IPL centuries and most runs in a season, and helped RCB win their first title in 2025.

4. Jasprit Bumrah

Bumrah has been central to all five Mumbai titles. With more than 160 wickets and a career economy under 7.50, he has defined death bowling in the IPL era.

5. Sunil Narine

Few players have changed a franchise’s identity like Narine. He drove KKR’s 2012 and 2014 title wins, won Player of the Tournament in 2012, then reinvented himself as a destructive opener and was MVP again in their 2024 title season.

6. David Warner

Warner was the Sunrisers Hyderabad’s defining batter and captain. He led them to their only title in 2016 and produced 848 runs that season, one of the great IPL campaigns.

7. AB de Villiers

De Villiers never won the IPL, but few players shaped a franchise’s identity more strongly. His finishing, his 2016 season of 687 runs and his partnership record with Kohli made him central to RCB’s rise as a marquee team.

8. Suresh Raina

Raina was Chennai’s batting constant for more than a decade. He was the first player to 2,000 IPL runs, played every CSK game up to April 2018, and became the side’s pressure player at No 3.

9. Lasith Malinga

Malinga was Mumbai’s original death-overs match-winner. His final-ball wicket sealed the 2019 title, and his yorkers helped define the franchise’s first championship era.

10. Kieron Pollard

Pollard was Mumbai’s enforcer for more than a decade. The IPL’s own profile describes him as central to MI’s theme, while ESPNcricinfo’s team history notes he was among their key title-winning match-winners.

Some honourable mentions include Chris Gayle, whose 175* remains the highest IPL score, Gautam Gambhir, Andre Russell, Shane Watson and Ravindra Jadeja.
