Rohit Sharma has made a shocking reveal and said that he contemplated retirement after the heartbreaking defeat against Australia in the 2023 ODI World Cup final. Rohit-led India enjoyed a dream run in the home WC. The Men in Blue won all nine games in the league stage. They defeated New Zealand, the runners-up of the 2019 WC, in the semi-final to punch their ticket to the final. Coming into the final on the back of 10 back-to-back wins, India stumbled and suffered a six-wicket defeat. Australia chased down the target of 241 with ease to win the ICC title.
Speaking at an event on Sunday (December 21), Rohit revealed that his "only goal" was to win the WC and the defeat left him devastated. Just seven months later, Rohit fulfilled his dream by leading India to a title win in the 2024 T20 World Cup.
"My only goal was to win the World Cup, whether it was the T20 World Cup or the 2023 World Cup. So when it didn’t happen, I was completely devastated. There was no energy left in my body. It took me a couple of months to recover and bring myself back," Rohit said.
"I knew that something else was coming the 2024 T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies and I had to shift all my focus towards that. It’s very easy to say this now, but at that moment, it was extremely difficult. At one point, I honestly felt like I didn’t want to play this sport anymore because it had taken everything out of me, and I felt I had nothing left."
Rohit retired from T20Is after leading India to a title win in 2024. Rohit-led India won another ICC trophy just eight months after the T20 WC. They lifted the 2025 Champions Trophy with a win over New Zealand in the final.
Rohit looked set to continue as the captain of the ODI team but the selectors sacked him from captaincy. He will now play the next ODI WC under Shubman Gill's captaincy. Gill was his deputy in the 2025 Champions Trophy.
Rohit is only active in one format. He is expected to retire from international cricket after the 2027 ODI WC. The former India captain will soon make his on-field return for the Mumbai cricket team in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
