Dale Earnhardt Jr dissects NASCAR photo evidence after Kyle Larson controversy
Dale Earnhardt Jr. has expressed his support for Kyle Larson's huge win at Talladega on Sunday after controversy marred the finish of the YellaWood 500.
Larson produced a stunning last-lap comeback to win at Talladega, but the Hendrick Motorsports star's decisive move close to the double-yellow line prompted scrutiny from NASCAR and sparked debate among fans.Larson surged from 11th to first on the final lap to snatch a vital victory with only two races remaining in the championship Chase, and the defending champion leading the standings.
Photos circulating after the race showed Larson's left-side tires riding along the yellow line, raising questions about whether he had violated NASCAR's rules against advancing below it.
However, according to The Athletic, officials reviewed the incident and determined that Larson's tires had not completely crossed below the line, ruling out retrospective action. That wasn't the only controversy from the afternoon.
NASCAR investigated whether other Chevrolet drivers had helped Larson reach the front by intentionally backing off. The Athletic claims officials reviewed SMT data from Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Cole Custer, and William Byron and determined that all three drivers remained at full throttle before the finish.
With all the evidence in front of him, NASCAR Hall of Famer Dale Jr. sees no reason for Sunday's result to be overturned. "This looks fine to me," Earnhardt wrote on social media.
"The photo used here, Larson has already achieved the pass anyways. And for the record, Haley was penalized unfairly. So was Regan Smith."
Overall, the win significantly strengthened Larson's bid to go back-to-back in the Cup Series. He picked up 71 championship points, seeing the No. 5 hold a 73-point lead over second-place Denny Hamlin with two races to go. The remainder of the "Chase" field, who can mathematically still win the title, will need to hope that Larson falls significantly short at Martinsville and in the season finale at Homestead-Miami.
After the Talladega win, Larson expressed cautious optimism. A lot can happen in the final two races. "There's still two races. It's so easy to look at it and be like, 'Oh, the 5's got it.' We could go to Martinsville, there's a stack-up in Turn 3 on the first lap. I could cave in the radiator and be done," he said.
"All you guys in (the media center) are like, 'This person is out, this person has it locked up.' They win, or something happens, boom, the picture completely changes. I'm not getting ahead of myself at all. I'm not going to let you guys get me ahead of myself either."
Championship 'Chase' Standings
There are only seven drivers left in the 'Chase' that are still in with a mathematical chance of being crowned champion.
Kyle Larson
Denny Hamlin -73
Christopher Bell -74
Chase Briscoe -79
Joey Logano -100
Ryan Blaney -107
Tyler Reddick -126
What's Denny Hamlin Said?
In last season's finale, it was Hamlin who had his heart broken, having spent most of the Phoenix race leading from the front. However, a late caution forced overtime, and Larson undercut him on pit road to finish ahead of him and be crowned champion.
He's hoping for a slice of revenge - but recognizes Larson's unformidable postseason form. "Maybe. Maybe not," Hamlin said.
"The 5 is on a massive run at the right time of the year," he continued. "If you asked me at the start of the day if I would take an eighth, I mean, probably.
"So, it's just what we've got. It's disappointing, but also like our day could have been a shit ton worse. We didn't get stage points. We tried. But it's just a lot of games going on. It's really, really hard, tough to do it."
