Days after Tim David was handed a 50 percent fine from his match fee for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct for Players and Team Officials, a video showing him smoking a cigar at the Narendra Modi Stadium went viral on social media on Wednesday. In the videos, widely circulated online, David can be seen smoking while being surrounded by the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) teammates.

The video appears to be after the IPL 2026 final between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Gujarat Titans. Romario Shepherd can be seen standing beside David, while teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi can also be seen in the background talking to a RCB player, who appears to be Phil Salt.

Despite there being no verified evidence of David actually indulging in the act, the video created has created significant buzz online. To support the claim many users even pointed to the post David shared on Instagram following RCB's latest IPL triumph. He can be seen posing with the silverware with Salt while holding a cigar on his mouth.

Meanwhile, in addition to the 50 percent fine, David was also handed two demerit points for Level 1 breach. This takes his tally to five demerit points, which will force him to sit out of the first match next season.

In a statement issued on Monday, the IPL said that the player was found guilty of breaching Article 2.9 of the league's Code of Conduct, which prohibits throwing a ball or any piece of cricket equipment, including items such as a water bottle, at or near a player, team official, umpire, match referee, or any other individual in an inappropriate or dangerous manner during a match.

According to the statement, the incident took place in the 10th over of the first innings when, after the fall of a wicket, David aggressively threw an ice bag in the direction of umpire Nitin Menon.

David admitted to the offence and accepted the penalty handed down by match referee Javagal Srinath.

Notably, this marked David's third Level 1 breach of the season, having previously incurred one demerit point in Match 20 and two demerit points in Match 54.

As per IPL regulations, accumulating five demerit points triggers an automatic one-match suspension.
