As excitement builds for the T20 World Cup 2026 clash between India and Pakistan this Sunday, former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has outlined a clear and simple strategy for his side. He has urged Salman Ali Agha’s team to stay composed and disciplined against Suryakumar Yadav’s India, stressing that fewer mistakes across batting, bowling and fielding will decide the outcome of the high-pressure match.

Afridi’s core message to beat India

Afridi, known for his attacking style as a player, has asked Pakistan to resist the urge to play overly aggressive cricket early on. He believes that basics, not brilliance, will define the result.

"Mistakes happen, but the team that commits fewer errors across the three departments-batting, bowling, and fielding-will succeed," Afridi stated.

For him, temperament is the biggest factor in a match where emotions and pressure can easily take over.

Squad depth gives Pakistan flexibility

Afridi pointed out that Pakistan’s current squad has enough depth to recover even if early wickets fall. This, he believes, allows the team to balance caution with aggression.

"We have a solid line-up and several players capable of hitting big," he said.

With batting strength stretching down to number eight, Pakistan have the option to rebuild if needed and still finish strongly in the final overs.

Plan for the innings: build first, explode later

Afridi has suggested a clear structure for Pakistan’s innings. His idea is to ensure the top-order bats deep into the game, allowing power-hitters to attack at the death.

"If our top six batters cannot bat through 15 or 16 overs, then after the sixth wicket falls, let the last two hitters take over for the remaining 24 balls to post a competitive total."

Opening pair must balance scoring and safety

Afridi said the role of the openers will be crucial. They must keep the scoreboard moving without giving away early wickets.

He wants the opening pair to combine intent with patience, ensuring Pakistan start well but do not take unnecessary risks in the powerplay.

With both teams carrying strong line-ups into Sunday’s contest, Afridi’s message is clear, in a match of nerves, the side that stays composed and makes fewer mistakes will walk away with the win.
