Jos Buttler Becomes First Wicketkeeper-Batsman to Score 4,000 T20 Runs
Kolkata, February 14: English cricketer Jos Buttler has made history by becoming the first wicketkeeper-batsman in the world to surpass 4,000 runs in T20 international cricket.
On Saturday, during England’s chase of a 153-run target against Scotland, Buttler achieved this milestone with a boundary on the fourth ball of the second over. This match also marked Buttler’s 150th T20 appearance for England, making him the fifth player globally and the only Englishman to reach this landmark. Ireland’s Paul Stirling leads the list with 163 T20 matches.
Buttler is now the fourth player overall to score 4,000 runs in T20 internationals, and he is the first English player to do so. Before him, Virat Kohli (4,188), Rohit Sharma (4,231), and Babar Azam (4,566) had reached this significant figure. Kohli was the first player to achieve 4,000 runs, hitting the milestone on November 10, 2022.
In the Group C match of the T20 World Cup 2026 against Scotland, Buttler needed just three runs to reach 4,000. He scored exactly three runs off four balls to complete the achievement.
Buttler made his T20 debut against India in 2011 and has accumulated over 4,000 runs at an average of more than 35 and a strike rate of 148, including 28 half-centuries and one century, with a top score of 101.
In the match played at Eden Gardens on Saturday, Scotland was bowled out for 152 runs in 19.4 overs, with captain Richie Berrington scoring 49 runs off 32 balls and Michael Jones contributing 33 runs. In response, England secured victory in 18.2 overs, with Tom Banton scoring an unbeaten 63 runs, including seven boundaries, while Jacob Bethel added 32 runs to the total.
