Why was Shubman Gill left out of India’s T20 World Cup 2026 squad? Ajit Agarkar explains
Ajit Agarkar explains Shubman Gill's omission from India's T20 World Cup 2026 squad and the reasons behind the decision.
Chief selector Ajit Agarkar on Saturday identified Shubman Gill’s recent lack of runs and combination compulsions as reasons for his omission from India’s squad for the T20 World Cup 2026.
Poor recent form behind Gill’s omission
Gill, who was recently appointed as the national T20 vice-captain, could not fire in the recent home series against Sri Lanka, making 4, 0 and 28 before missing the fifth match because of an injury.
Ajit Agarkar explains selection decision
“We know what a quality player he is, but, perhaps short of a little bit of runs at the moment,” said Agarkar in the press conference for India’s squad announcement.
“It’s unfortunate to have missed out in the last World Cup as well because we went with different combinations. But it’s the combinations more than anything else…Someone has to miss out when you pick 15 and unfortunately, it’s Gill at this point,” Agarkar added.
Combination and Squad Balance Key Factors
Agarkar further explained that while Gill is a key player for India, the team had to consider squad balance and combination options. The 15-member squad for the T20 World Cup 2026 was finalized keeping in mind players’ form, roles, and versatility ahead of the global event.
Impact of Gill’s Absence
This decision comes amid discussions around India’s batting line-up, vice-captain roles, and strategic options for the upcoming tournament. Fans and cricket experts are now analyzing the squad composition and the impact of Gill’s absence on India’s chances in the T20 World Cup 2026, which is set to begin in February.
Ishan Kishan’s Return: India has announced its squad for the T20 World Cup 2026 and the upcoming T20 series against New Zealand. On Saturday, BCCI Secretary Devjit Saikia unveiled the Indian team, which includes the return of batsman Ishan Kishan after almost two years. Kishan last played for India in November 2023 against Australia.
Stellar Domestic form earns comeback
The 27-year-old Ishan Kishan impressed in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, scoring over 500 runs at an average of 57, including two centuries, one of which came in the final against Haryana. His consistent performances in domestic cricket paved the way for his selection in the T20 World Cup squad
