Wanderers pursuit of promotion hits snag with defeat to Avengers

Wanderers had a promising start to the season in their pursuit of a return to the Gold Division of the Cricket Uganda 50-Over League.

They shared points with Soroti City in the opener, with no ball bowled at the Serenity Oval in Kamengo, and put in a run-filled performance against Nile Cricket Club in their second fixture, signalling early intent from the side.

However, their promising run suffered a setback as they fell to a 45-run defeat against Avengers CC, failing to chase down a modest target of 145.

Coming into the fixture, Wanderers were riding high on confidence after a dominant 165-run victory over Nile Cricket Club. In that match, they showcased their batting firepower, posting 278 all out in 48 overs. Key contributions came from Hitesh Prajapati (41), Edgar Mudoola (41), Ivan Kakande (38), Ian Bamuturaki (31), Eric Mukisa (23), and Muhumuza Daniel, who top-scored with 47.

Their bowling attack was equally impressive, highlighted by a hat-trick from Eric Mukisa, while Ivan Kakande and Waiswa Anderson picked up two wickets each, dismissing Nile for just 113 in 27.5 overs.

That dominance, however, did not carry into their clash against Avengers CC. After losing the toss, Wanderers’ bowlers initially rose to the occasion. Mukisa once again led from the front with a superb four-wicket haul, while Ivan Kakande and Mugwanya Edward claimed two wickets apiece. Their disciplined effort restricted Avengers to 144 all out in 35.2 overs, a target that appeared well within reach.

Despite the strong bowling display, Wanderers’ batting faltered under pressure. Mandeep Singh (20) and Okema Julius (22) provided a steady start, but the middle order failed to build on the foundation. Wickets fell in quick succession, halting any momentum in the chase.

The collapse was orchestrated by Avengers’ bowler Yashashvi Joshi, whose outstanding figures of 6 for 19 dismantled the Wanderers lineup. From a relatively stable 57/1, Wanderers crumbled to 83/9, effectively ending their hopes of victory. A late effort from Byaruhanga Joseph (18) offered little resistance, as Wanderers were eventually bowled out for 99 in 24.3 overs.

The defeat highlighted a stark contrast from their previous outing, where both batting and bowling units had performed in sync. Against Avengers, while the bowlers delivered a competitive effort, the batting unit failed to replicate its earlier form.

Wanderers Cricket Club now sits second on the Silver League table with three points—two from their win against Nile Cricket Club and one from the washout against Soroti City. The loss to Avengers serves as a timely reminder of the consistency required in a tightly contested single-leg league.

As the side continues to nurse the wound of relegation from last season, they may need to up their strategy if they want to return to the Gold Division; in the very least remain in the Silver League, but most importantly, avoid slipping further down into Bronze.

With no second chances in a single round-robin format, the pressure is firmly on. The club will need at least three wins from their remaining four fixtures to secure a top-two finish and promotion, or at minimum, two wins to maintain their silver status.

In those final fixtures, Wanderers face a challenging path, taking on Kutchi Tigers B Cricket Club, relatives of last year’s 50-Over champions Kutchi Tigers, the unpredictable SKLPS Cricket Club, St. John’s SS Mukono, and table leaders Ismaili Community Cricket Club in their push to return to the top flight.

The club will now look to regroup ahead of their next fixture against Kutchi Tigers B, knowing that every remaining match carries significant weight in their quest for redemption and a return to the Gold Division.
