It proved a particularly memorable night for Selkirk’s 35-year-old bowler David Gardiner, who picked up no fewer than four trophies on the night.

“David has been one of the side’s most consistent performers throughout the 2026 campaign,” Selkirk president John Smail told an audience of sponsors, members, players and guests.

“His game has come on by leaps and bounds this season, with his deceptive slow-medium deliveries putting opposition batters in all kinds of difficulty. David’s tally of 37 wickets in the season was a great achievement.”

The awards were handed out by Mrs Sally Paterson, who is the wife of team manager Kenny and mother of Selkirk’s junior coach Cara.

The junior section awards saw Eilidh Kimber become the first female player to win the Andrew Henderson Shield for the Most Promising Colt.

Other junior award winners were:

Hardball: Most Improved Player - Max Hewson.

Monday girls’ softball: Most Improved Player - Molly Edwards; Most Promising Player - Freya Ross.

Friday boys’ softball: Most Improved Player - Freddie Lindsay; Most Promising Player - Douglas Anderson.

Junior section coaches Cara Paterson, Liam Skeldon and Gregor Borthwick were thanked for the commitment and enthusiasm they had shown at every practice session.

In spite of defeating East League Division 3’s second and third-placed teams both home and away, a slow start by the senior men’s team saw Selkirk eventually relegated to Division 4.

“Despite this, there were some outstanding individual displays during the campaign,” said the president, “and it these achievements we recognise tonight.”

For the eighth successive year, the trophy for the club’s best batter went to Selkirk’s co-vice-captain Greg Fenton, who amassed a total of 734 runs in all competitions,

The Best Bowler Trophy was won for the first time by David Gardiner, who took 37 wickets, while the trophy for the best fielder went to Rory Banks  with a total of 17 catches.

David Gardiner picked up the Most Improved Player of the Year Cup, as well as winning the Players’ Player of the Year Trophy – an award which is voted for by the Selkirk players themselves.

The Young Player of the Year Trophy was won for the second successive season by 16-year-old Shaun Wilkinson, who also picked up one of three ‘Magic Moments of the Season’ awards (the other two being won by David Gardiner and Rory Banks).

The final trophy to be presented was the Allen Turnbull ‘Spirit of Cricket’ Award, given each year in memory of former Selkirk Cricket Club captain Allen Turnbull, who passed away in 2024.

The president said the 2026 winner, Rory Banks, was someone who makes an enormous contribution to Selkirk Cricket Club both on and off the field.

“Rory willingly filled the vacant post of fixtures secretary, helps prepare the wicket each Saturday, raised £1,000 for club funds by running in the 2026 London Marathon, and even tonight has organised a football scratch card draw, raising £80 for the club. He is a very worthy winner.”

Skipper Daniel Heard then made a special presentation to the club’s main sponsor, Stuart Young of Cameron’s Bakery, for doing so much to support the club throughout its 175th anniversary year, and for kindly laying on a wonderful spread for guests at the event.

A successful evening came to a close when young Katie Gillie presented a bouquet of flowers to Mrs Sally Paterson.
