Mandla Mashimbyi bemoans Proteas Women series defeat to New Zealand

The White Ferns recorded a comprehensive 66-run victory in Wellington, as they posted a 307-run target for the South Africans, who were bowled out for 240.

Coach Mandla Mashimbyi gave a scathing assessment of his side's performance in the decider, pin-pointing their bowling – after a strong start – as their biggest let down.

"Yeah, it's never nice losing a game, especially when you've put yourself in good positions and don't go on and capitalise from those positions," said Mashimbyi.

"With the ball, we had New Zealand in trouble early on and we squeezed them, but when you're going to have a partnership like the one between Holiday and Green – they literally just took the game away from us.

"I think after the 10 overs, when we had them three [wickets] down, we just let the pressure off a little bit and we allowed them to get in.

"We didn't squeeze them enough, I think maybe in the next five overs, which allowed them to get in and that's the one period I think we could have done differently.

"And obviously at the latter stage, I think after 34 overs, we could have also just maybe minimised the boundaries there into the last 10, and that's where they actually capitalised. I think those two moments for me were probably the biggest moments in the game."

The batting performance was also not spared, with the scarcity in solid partnerships proving the Proteas Women's Achilles heal, with Anneke Bosch' 91-run stand in the second ODI the top score from the batters.

"Yeah, from an individual point of view, yes, but from a partnership point of view I think we could have done a lot better – quite disappointed that we didn't have hundreds," he added.

"We normally pride ourselves in scoring hundreds, so in the whole tour we didn't get one hundred, we're normally the team that scores hundreds and this time around we didn't do that. It just shows, when you don't get partnerships, it's hard to score those hundreds."
