The early results are in and the award for the best pint of stout in Belfast goes to....

Tyrone McKenna was well used to having his hand raised in the boxing ring, but now he is the one doing the judging - and allowing others to do the same.

The west Belfast boxer has launched a new app with a couple of friends that allows people to rate the pints of stout on offer in pubs in Belfast, and beyond.

The trio behind 'Stout 'n About' - McKenna, fellow boxer Tyrone McCullagh and software designer Ciaran MacManus - hope to see the app rolled out in England, Scotland and Wales in the coming months, and eventually in the United States.

Two weeks after going live, the app has 1,000 downloads and the venue in Belfast with the best pint of stout is the Cliftonville Bowling Club - according to Stout n' About. The Skegoneil venue has a string of perfect five-star ratings, pipping The Clifton Public House and St Enda's GAC in Belfast.

"It's Madden's for me," says co-founder McKenna, a six-time Irish national champion as an amateur and WBC International and WBO Intercontinental title holder as a professional. "But the top-rated pub is the Cliftonville Bowling Club, yeah.

"It went live on St Patrick's Day, I had a few pints that day. We have had over 1,000 downloads since, so it's going well. We are just trying to raise awareness now.

"We are getting a few other well-known sporting figures to try it too and that will encourage people to join. It's just about trying to get the word out now, we have a few Tiktok videos too."

The name is certainly one that people will remember but McKenna, 36, says he can't take the credit for it.

"You know, none of us are even sure who came up with it or when exactly, it just came to us and it's stuck. We got it trademarked, it's a great name," he said.

"It's a long time in the making, probably seven years now since myself and another boxer, Tyrone McCullagh, started thinking about it with another friend Ciaran MacManus.

"It just came from when we were out and about ourselves and were hit with some bad, bad stout. We were just saying it would be brilliant to know where the best stout is. There is good stout and there is bad stout and it's something people want to know.

"Who better to know than the people drinking it, so you rate it there and then and everyone can see. Seven years later, it's now a reality.

"There's a social aspect to it too, you can add friends, they can add ratings and comments and you can see where they are out.

"It's across all of Ireland now. If I'm in Cork for example, I can just check and see where the best Guinness in town is, or whatever stout. Wherever it is, you can see how your local stacks up. We hope to get it opened up to England, Scotland and Wales and then the USA as well."

McKenna turned his back on retirement for the second time after basking in the 25th victory of his career, against Dylan Moran at Windsor Park back in September. He had announced before the fight that it would be his last, but he also said that after losing to Lewis Crocker almost two years ago, only to return months later.

'The Mighty Celt' said afterwards: “Eddie Hearn came up to me straight away, he's like, ‘Are you done?’ and I said, ‘No chance, get me a fight’ so hopefully he's getting me another fight".

But it's been a 'waiting game' for McKenna after an anticipated Lewis Crocker fight card in Belfast didn't materialise.

"I'm hoping for something soon and have been badgering my manager for a fight date to get back into training for," said McKenna who boasts a 25-6-1 record.

"There were talks about being chief support for Lewis Crocker's next fight at Windsor but it was moved to Australia so that fell through. It's a bit of a waiting game but I'm hoping for the summer, June time maybe."
