Eyes On 2027 World Cup? Bhuvneshwar Kumar Set For 50-Over Cricket Return After 3 Years
Bhuvneshar Kumar is set to put himself in contention for the 2027 World Cup after declaring an intention to play the 50-over format again after three years in domestic cricket.
After earning a comeback to the Indian T20I side after four years, Bhuvneshwar Kumar has revealed he will return to 50-over cricket after three years and play the upcoming edition of the Vijay Hazare Trophy (VHT) after three years. The star pacer claimed he will play in both the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) and India's premier List A domestic competition for Uttar Pradesh.
While Bhuvneshwar preferred to stay in the present, he has not played any 50-over cricket since December 2023. He did not take part in the VHT in both the 2024-25 and 2025-26 seasons. A potential return to the longer white-ball format could open doors to play for India in the 2027 Cricket World Cup, which will take place next year in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, with the composition of the Shubman-Gill-led team's pace attack still uncertain.
"I am not thinking too far ahead, like I did in the last few years. I am happy with what I am getting. Of course, I will play domestic cricket, whether it is the Vijay Hazare Trophy or the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. So I am looking forward to that," said Bhuvneshwar in a post-match press conference after the third T20I between India and New Zealand in Wellington on being asked about a potential ODI comeback.
Bhuvneshwar last played an ODI for India in January 2022 against South Africa. He was part of the Indian team in both the 2025 and 2019 World Cups but was not considered for the 2023 edition at home.
So far, his comeback to the T20I team has not gone to plan as he has taken only one wicket in three games and conceded 139 runs at an economy of 11.58.
Talking about his return to the team, Bhuvneshwar claimed he did not chase a return but claimed he was very proud to wear the national team jersey again.
"To tell you the truth, I did not chase [an India comeback]. Yes, it is a dream. I am not saying that I am not happy. I am very happy. To play for India, to represent India, it is a matter of pride. So, I am feeling very proud that I made a comeback. But the truth is that I did not chase it. For four years, whatever was coming in front of me - tournaments, challenges, whatever - about cricket, about fitness, whatever else, I kept doing it. I never thought that I would want to play cricket for [only an India] comeback. So I think that made things very easy. Luckily, the performance happened. I think all the credit goes to my [last] two years of IPL. Because of that, [an India comeback] is happening," Bhuvneshar stated.
