It is 1 April, and as we step into the second quarter of the year, I am struck by the incredible momentum in our space. From the grit of the Absa Cape Epic to the clinical performances on the cricket pitch, South African women are making headlines. But here is a truth I’ve learned over 20 years in this industry: performing on the field is only half the battle.

To turn your athletic success into a sustainable career, you must be the CEO of your own brand. You have to own your narrative. Here is your roadmap to closing the visibility gap in the months ahead.

1. Your Phone is Your Broadcasting Booth

In 2026, you don’t need a fancy camera crew to tell your story. You have a global microphone in your pocket.

The Power of the ‘Raw’ Moment

Don’t wait for a professional photoshoot. If you’ve just won Player of the Match or hit a personal best, snap a photo on your mobile phone right there on the field!

Authenticity Wins

Fans and sponsors today value the ‘sweat and tears’ over polished perfection. That grainy, post-match selfie captures the real emotion of the win and that is what resonates.

3. Build a Brand with a ‘Why’

Modern brands aren’t just looking for stats; they are looking for values.

Find Your Purpose

Are you playing for the little girl in the stands who needs a hero? Are you advocating for mental health or grassroots development?

Engagement is Currency

It’s not about how many followers you have; it’s about how much they care. Talk to your community. When you engage, you turn “followers” into a “fanbase,” and that is what drives professionalisation.
