In English domestic cricket, the year 2000 marked more than the advent of the new millennium: for the first time in history, there were two divisions in the County Championship, a competition older than the Modern Olympics. Since then, the Championship has continued with a promotion-and-relegation system.
Barring the World Wars, the County Championship has run continuously since 1890 – with the exception of 2020, when COVID-19 brought the world to a standstill. The competition was replaced by the Bob Willis Trophy.
