Tensions Rise Ahead of T20 World Cup Match
Colombo: The captain of Pakistan, Salman Ali Agha, has not confirmed whether his team will engage in the traditional handshake with India prior to their T20 World Cup match on Sunday. However, he expressed hope that players from both sides will honor the spirit of the game.
Last September, during the Asia Cup in Dubai, Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav declared that his team would refrain from shaking hands with Pakistan as a tribute to Indian citizens who lost their lives in the Pahalgam terror attack in April of the previous year. This decision was also seen as a show of support for the Indian Army during 'Operation Sindoor.'
It appears that this protocol will be maintained for the upcoming match, with both captains likely to avoid handshakes during the toss and at the conclusion of the game.
Agha stated, "We will see about it tomorrow," when asked if the handshake tradition would be observed.
Given the heightened tensions surrounding the match following Pakistan's initial boycott, Agha aims to avoid any controversies and emphasized the importance of both teams playing in the true spirit of cricket.
He remarked, "I expect the game to be played in the spirit it has always been played since its inception."
