South Africa lost several prominent athletes across rugby, boxing, cricket, football, swimming, and other sports in 2025. The year saw the passing of both legendary veterans and active players who left an indelible mark on their disciplines. These sports figures shaped eras, inspired generations of fans, and left lasting legacies in the national sporting landscape.

The South African sports community faced a somber year, bidding farewell to icons who embodied resilience, skill, and passion. From the rugby fields to the boxing ring, cricket pitches, and football stadiums, their contributions transcended sport, uniting the nation in triumph and reflection.

The boxing world mourned several figures, including legendary featherweight champion Israel 'The Speed Fire' Khonkobe, who passed away on September 6 at age 76 after a long illness. Known for his remarkable speed and skill, Khonkobe's legacy as a former South African champion continues to inspire upcoming fighters.

Other notable losses included Lee Dyer, Emile Brice, Daniel Bruwer, Dr Steven Saad, and Steve Kalakoda, each leaving behind a trail of memorable bouts and contributions to the sport.

Rugby suffered significant losses, with the community reeling from the deaths of both veterans and rising stars. Tragically, Lusanda Dumke, the former Springbok Women’s captain and 2022 Women’s Player of the Year, passed away at age 29 from stomach cancer. She led the Bulls Daisies to three consecutive titles and earned 33 caps for South Africa.

Former Springbok Cornal Hendricks died at 37 from a heart attack, remembered for his remarkable comeback after a heart condition and his distinction in both 15s and sevens rugby. Other losses included Piet Bester, Andy van der Watt, Sakkie de Klerk, Piet Strydom, Wally Walters, Kobus van der Merwe, Toy Dannhauser, Norman Mbiko, Braam Reynecke, Des van Jaarsveldt, Vuyo Maqholo, Daniel Snyman, Bevan Fortuin, Jan Boland Coetzee, Max Baise, and Hennie van Zyl.

Cricket said goodbye to Ron Draper, the oldest living Test cricketer at the time, who passed at 98. The top-order batsman played two Tests for South Africa in 1950. Also mourned were promising talents Kamohelo Mtsweni and South African-born former England international Robin Smith.

Football losses included Zimbabwean-born striker Tendai Ndoro, who played for Orlando Pirates, as well as Desmond Chauke and Gerry Francis. These players brought flair and dedication to the beautiful game in South Africa.

In swimming and triathlon events, tragedies struck during competitions, including two participants in the IRONMAN 70.3 in Mossel Bay on November 16. Other disciplines saw losses like road runner Jetman Msutu and rower Kerry Grundlingh.

As 2025 draws to a close, South Africa reflects on these heroes who not only excelled in their sports but also inspired unity and pride. Their legacies endure in the hearts of fans and the next generation of athletes. Rest in peace to all who left us this year.
